USA - Canada - Mexico 2016 - Day 49

Monday, 24 October 2016 - Seattle, Washington - Fort Langley, British Columbia.

Well, we did it. We're back safe and sound in Fort Langley, 46 days and 17,981 kilometres after starting out.

Today started out similar to most of the ride, a brisk 13 degrees C gradually rising to 16 degrees C in places. The wind chill factor seemed to be a bit higher than usual, must have been a breeze coming off the snow capped mountains of the range to the east.

North past Marysville and there was a sign we have been waiting to see all the way around, "Rest Area Ahead. Next Rest Area 30 mls". Too early to stop but the next one just short of Bellingham should be about right. We reached it with the air still cold and there was that sign again, "Rest Area Ahead. Next Rest Area 30 mls". This is great, why just on our last day. We decided to enjoy the anticipation and wait for the next one as it was just before we would turn off to cross the border into Canada.

And there it was, beauty, swing off the highway with anticipation and whack, straight into what must have been the worst smell you could ever get on the highway. Too late to do anything but go through. I knew what was coming, next thing I heard Therese's helmet opening and her gagging and expected the worst but she kept everything under control and we exited the other side quicker than we entered. Apparently they spray the fields in the area with liquid manure and while it supposedly only smells for about 30 minutes, we must have struck it just after spraying.

Into Blain and having to find some where to stop, we spotted a sign to a park. Turns out the park was a walk up a hill and into the trees. It may have been nice but we stayed where we were and used a large flat topped rock for our final smoko which seemed fitting after all the previous situations we had been in.

Through border control and covered the final 17 kilometres in around 35 minutes and arrived at John and Terry to a great welcome.

A big thanks to John and Terry for the use of their Goldwing which was very much appreciated and made this fantastic trip possible. We stay here a few days for a look around, some relaxation and some fellowship before flying back to Los Angeles.

This won't be the end of the updates as these will continue until we get home. They may not be as exciting or as entertaining as they have been to date, at least I hope they were, but the story will continue. If you have been following our ride and haven't been in contact, drop us an email to let us know how you enjoyed it so I can consider whether it's worth doing again next time.

139 klms today. Final total for the ride 17,981 klms.
